Dymetadrine Xtreme Fat Burner Review: Does Dymetadrine Xtreme Work?

AST makes no-nonsense body building and sport performance supplements. Their Dymetadrine Xtreme weight loss pill used to be an extremely potent ephedra-based product. Not any more, of course. It’s been re-formulated to comply with ephedra’s illegal status.

How’s the new version fare up? Well, in addition to a smattering of magnesium and vitamin C and a whopping dose of vitamin B6, it contains a 1393 mg proprietary blend of…

1. Green tea extract (standardized for EGCG): When it comes to natural weight loss supplements that actually show some real promise, green tea and its critical polyphenols—specifically EGCG (or epigallocatechin gallate) are as close as it gets to “the bomb.” There’s good news and bad news here, however; the green tea in this formula is standardized for EGCG, but since its part of proprietary formula, it’s impossible to tell whether there’s enough of it here to deliver the sort of dose shown useful in studies.

2. L-Phenyalanine: An amino acid similar in structure to many “feel good” brain chemicals, phenyalanine can be converted into tyrosine (see next ingredient) or phenylethylamine, another mood-elevating compound that is commonly found in chocolate. As far as direct fat burning benefits go, this ingredient does not have any.

3. L-Tyrosine: In weight loss supplements, this ingredient plays one of two roles: it is either present as a mood-elevator (and there is plenty of evidence it is useful in this regard, albeit at dosages much high than those found in this product). Alternatively, it is included because as a precursor to the thyroid hormone thyroxine (also known as T4), supplementation may have a positive effect on thyroid hormone levels which may contribute to an increased metabolic rate. No clinical evidence validates this hypothesis at this time, however.

4. Caffeine Anhydrous: A common ingredient in the majority of diet pills on the market, caffeine is a decent thermogenic with demonstrated benefits for weight loss (see Am J Clin Nutr. 1989 Jan;49(1):44-50, Am J Clin Nutr. 1980 May;33(5):989-97), although some data indicates it offers greater benefits to lean individuals that those who are overweight (see Am J Physiol. 1995 Oct;269(4 Pt 1):E671-8). It provides users with a “boost” of energy with sometimes makes goals like regular workouts a little more easy to attain.

Additionally, the combination of caffeine and green tea present in this formula is a good one, and encourages even greater weight loss (see Obes Res. 2005 Jul;13(7):1195-204).

5. Norsynephrine HCL: Synephrine and its “various variations” have been touted as a credible alternative to ephedra for some time now. Unfortunately, existing clinical data on synephrine shows it to demonstrate nearly negligible results for weight loss.

6. Theobromine HCL: A caffeine-related chemical, theobromine may help with weight loss by inhibiting the action of the enzyme that converts active cAMP to inactive cAMP (cAMP is a “cellular regulator.”

In other words, this compound is required to “spark” many intracellular processes.

An increased concentration of cAMP can have such “total-body” effects as a raised metabolism.

However, this is mostly speculation much of it based on this compound’s similarity to caffeine; there is no clinical evidence validating theobromine’s weight loss effects at this time. It is a stimulant, however, and will therefore add to the “boost” you get from this product.

7. Yohimbine HCL: From our glossary

“Yohimbine stimulates lipolysis by increasing blood flow in adipose tissue and blocking the activation of a 2-adrenoceptors on fat cells…although it works better in theory than in fact.

A few studies bear out Yohimbe’s positive effect on weight loss (Isr J Med Sci. 1991 Oct;27(10):550-6) but its effects are hardly earth-shattering.

And there you have it.

Dymetadrine Xtreme‘s weight loss benefits lie with the combination of green tea and caffeine that most decent fat burners contain. After that, the benefits diminish considerably; yohimbine’s weight loss effects are not amazing, and while theobromine and norsynephrine offer addition stimulatory effects their effects on weight loss have not been credibly demonstrated. The addition of low-dose tyrosine and phenyalanine my provide an additional mental boost, but no additional fat burning powers.

That said, I have no doubt this is a potent concoction; I’ve used AST products in the past generally found them to be pretty decent. It’s not expensive either—if you look around, you can find it for about $20 or so.

Considering this is only 5 or 6 dollars more than what it would cost you to buy a high quality green tea supplement and caffeine tabs to stack them together with, Dymetadrine Xtreme may be worth experimenting with, if for nothing more than the marginal additional benefit and the convenience factor.

Summary of Dymetradine Xtreme

  • Certain ingredients are weak.
  • Not a fat loss miracle.
