Creepy Commercial

Ok, Roche gets my vote for creating the creepiest ad evah (!) for a weight loss product.  The company’s NZ ad campaign for Xenical virtually equates losing weight with your worst nightmares.

Then again, considering that “anal leakage” is one of the side effects you can get with Xenical, “worst nightmare” might be an appropriate metaphor, after all.

  1. That has got to be about the weirdest commercial I have ever seen. I don’t think it would make me want to look into their product.

    But that’s just me.

    • I think that’s any rational person… Personally, if I were obese, and fantasizing about what life would be like as a thin person, tending wounded soldiers in a trench, walking naked in the snow and facing execution by a firing squad certainly aren’t the sorts of images I’d be conjuring up.

Of course, therein lies a fallacy: that being thin is a prerequisite for living an exciting, interesting life… or that one’s life as a thin person will be appreciably different than it was as a fat person. IMHO, losing weight and getting in shape will improve someone’s life, in that s/he will be healthier, more physically competent (and perhaps confident as well) and face less prejudice/judgement… but that’s about it. Losing weight won’t solve your emotional, social or financial problems.

Life will not automatically become glamorous or exciting, so I think it’s dead wrong to imply this in sales pitches.

  2. Agree completely! This “sales pitch” is in very poor taste.
