Simple Steps To Fitness

A couple of summers ago, John attended a conference in Pittsburgh, so on a whim, the kids and I decided we’d tag along too, and make a short vacation out of it. Pittsburgh has some pretty cool, family-oriented things to do (the Zoo/Aquarium and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History are aweome), so it was a fun trip. Of course, when we travel, John and I like to get some semblance of a workout in, even if it’s nothing more...

Bench Day – Update V

Yesterday’s session was a small improvement over last week, overall.  While I still didn’t hit all the reps in each set, I didn’t suffer from “TMC” (total moral collapse) in my final sets, either.  I managed: 5/5, 5/5, 4/5, 4/5, 4/5 (@ 135 lbs.) We’ll see what next week brings.  I figure I’ll continue working on this until we leave for the Arnold Classic (March 5), then it will be time for a...

Bench Day – Update III

I weighed 127 lbs. this morning…life is good. 🙂 I felt pretty stiff this morning, thanks to my Wednesday and Thursday workouts, so I made sure to take my time warming up. This helped a lot. My first set was a bit wobbly, but I got through it, and steadied up over the subsequent sets. I completed the first 4 sets at 130 lbs: 5/5, 5/5, 5/5, 5/5. So I put the big plates on (135 lbs!) for the last set and managed 3 full reps. This...

Exercise Machines and Calories

I ran across this article by Julie Deardorff in the Chicago Tribune today, which discusses the accuracy of the calorie counters on cardio machines…the take home is that you may not be burning as many cals as you think you are, depending on the machine you use… “The bicycle predictions are the easiest to make, because the variation in people’s mechanical efficiency is relatively low, and it’s very easy to...

Bench Day – Update

Still working on the bench…and I was more than a bit concerned this morning, when I stepped on the scale: 123.6 lbs. That’s down, not up…and not a good sign, either. I can’t afford to let my weight slip while trying to increase my bench. But all’s well that ends well: my new 5 RM is 130 lbs. 🙂 Ten pounds to go…but I really need to watch my diet this week to make sure I stay in the 125 – 126...

Bench Day

Otherwise known as “a date with my husband.” Yep, that’s what we’ve been doing for the last month or so, every Saturday afternoon. We often hit the gym together, although we typically go our separate ways. But this is the one thing we’ve agreed to do together. This is nice for me, as John is a fully trained spotter…he knows not to snatch the damned bar out of my hands or “over help” if I...
