It&#8217;s absolutely vital to our health and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Iron is an integral part of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chem.ucla.edu\/dept\/Faculty\/merchant\/maproject\/Pathways\/structures\/Heme.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heme<\/a>&#8220;\u2014a complex molecule associated with a variety of proteins. Hemoglobin is one of the most important\u2014it&#8217;s the primary protein found in red blood cells and is used to transport oxygen from the lungs to other tissues. Likewise, vegetarians also have higher iron requirements, due to reduced bioavailability of dietary iron (as noted above, non-heme sources contain inhibitors such as phytates and polyphenols). The RDAs for vegetarians should be adjusted to: 14mg\/day for men and post-menopausal women; 33mg\/day for pre-menopausal women and 26mg\/day for adolescent girls.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of iron deficiency include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fatigue<\/li>\n<li>decline in work or school performance<\/li>\n<li>childhood developmental delays<\/li>\n<li>difficulty maintaining body temperature<\/li>\n<li>decreased immune function\/increased susceptibility to infection<\/li>\n<li>glossitis (an inflamed tongue)<\/li>\n<li>pica (eating of non-nutritive substances such as dirt and clay)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Groups at highest risk for iron deficiency are infants\/young children, teenagers, pregnant women, and women of childbearing age. Individuals who engage in intense exercise may also be at risk; as are people with conditions that limit iron absorption (i.e., celiac disease, <em>Helicobacter pylori<\/em> infection, gastric bypass surgery). Nonetheless, iron supplements are generally not recommended in the absence of a diagnosed deficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s a nutrient that proves it&#8217;s possible to have too much of a good thing, then iron would be it&#8230;Iron has a dark side too. <a href=\"http:\/\/emedicine.medscape.com\/article\/815213-overview?cc=aHR0cDovL2VtZWRpY2luZS5tZWRzY2FwZS5jb20vYXJ0aWNsZS84MTUyMTMtb3ZlcnZpZXc=&amp;cookieCheck=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Excessive amounts can be toxic<\/a>: overdosing on iron-containing products (such as chewable multivitamins) is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/professional\/sec21\/ch326\/ch326i.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading cause of poisoning fatalities in young children<\/a>. In addition, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17823849?ordinalpos=4&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iron is a pro-oxidant<\/a> that can catalyze the formation of harmful free radicals.
