{"id":726,"date":"2009-01-04T19:30:20","date_gmt":"2009-01-04T17:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=726"},"modified":"2015-02-12T21:21:03","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T02:21:03","slug":"mona-vie-any-better-than-welchs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/mona-vie-any-better-than-welchs\/","title":{"rendered":"Mona Vie: Any Better Than Welch&#8217;s?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Looking at the numbers, the answer is &#8220;probably not.&#8221;*<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s actually <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/action\/cookieAbsent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study that&#8217;s been done on Mona Vie<\/a>, which proves that Mona Vie &#8220;works.&#8221;\u00a0 Subjects given 120 ml (that&#8217;s approx. 4 one ounce servings) showed modest improvements in serum antioxidant capacity (about 10% by 2 h post-consumption) and a decrease in lipid peroxidation.\u00a0 The measured ORAC value of the juice was 22.8 umoles TE\/ml, and the total phenolics were 1.48 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalents) per ml.<\/p>\n<p>These are good numbers, to be sure&#8230;and I&#8217;m sure that the Mona Vie pushers are delighted with them.\u00a0 Of course, this study looked at Mona Vie as a standalone &#8211; it wasn&#8217;t compared to anything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wonderfulpomegranateresearch.com\/media\/pdf\/health\/SAA_Seeram_2008_JAgriand_Food_Chem_Comp_of_AntiOx_Potency_of_Beverages_in_US_041.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">That&#8217;s where another study comes in&#8230;<\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Antioxidant potency, ability to inhibit LDL oxidation, and total polyphenol content were consistent in classifying the antioxidant capacity of the polyphenol-rich beverages in the following order: PJ [pomegranate juice]\u00a0&gt; red wine &gt; Concord grape juice &gt; blueberry juice &gt; black cherry juice, a\u00e7a\u00ed juice, cranberry juice &gt; orange juice, iced tea beverages, apple juice.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, this study looked at three different concord grape juices, of which Welch&#8217;s was only one (the other two were Knudsen &#8211; Just Concord, and Lakewood &#8211; Pure Concord Grape).\u00a0 And what were the numbers on these?<\/p>\n<p><strong>ORAC:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Knudsen: 26.4 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">+<\/span> 1.9 umoles TE\/ml<\/li>\n<li>Lakewood: 30.5 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">+<\/span> 1.4 umoles TE\/ml<\/li>\n<li>Welch&#8217;s: 20.8 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">+<\/span>\u00a0 2.2 umoles TE\/ml<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Total Phenolics:<\/strong> 2.6 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">+<\/span> 0.4 mg GAE\/ml<\/p>\n<p>Plain ol&#8217; purple grape juice clearly comes out on top.<\/p>\n<p>Good ol&#8217; Welch&#8217;s concord grape juice actually has a pretty extensive profile of phenolics, too, <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/action\/cookieAbsent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to one detailed analysis<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/76\/6\/1367.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">There are documented health effects as well<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>CGJ supplementation provided significant antioxidant protection<sup> <\/sup>to serum, plasma proteins, and LDL as evidenced by changes in<sup> <\/sup>serum ORAC activity, concentrations of protein carbonyls in<sup> <\/sup>native plasma, and LDL oxidative resistance. These results are<sup> <\/sup>in agreement with those of other studies, which showed the in<sup> <\/sup>vivo antioxidant activity of red grape juice concentrate or<sup> <\/sup>purple grape juice (<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ultimatefatburner.com%2Fufb-blog%2Fwp-admin%2F&amp;reauth=1\"><em>19\u2013<\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ultimatefatburner.com%2Fufb-blog%2Fwp-admin%2F&amp;reauth=1\"><em>21<\/em><\/a><em>).
