{"id":6908,"date":"2013-06-03T21:09:37","date_gmt":"2013-06-04T01:09:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=6908"},"modified":"2015-02-16T09:03:37","modified_gmt":"2015-02-16T14:03:37","slug":"dr-millers-lack-of-willpower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/dr-millers-lack-of-willpower\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Miller&#8217;s Lack of Willpower"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The internet is abuzz today, over this tweet from Dr. Geoffrey Miller, a psychology professor at the University of New Mexico (currently a visiting instructor at NYU).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dear obese PhD applicants: If you don&#8217;t have the willpower to stop eating carbs, you won&#8217;t have the willpower to do a dissertation. #truth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Miller has already deleted and apologized for the tweet, but only after the internet (deservedly) fell on his head (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewire.com\/national\/2013\/06\/how-twitter-schooled-nyu-professor-about-fat-shaming\/65833\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AtlanticWire has a good summary here<\/a>). I don&#8217;t doubt that attitudes like his play a role in <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/oby.20171\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the weight bias observed by Burmeister et. al in graduate school admissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Call me naive, but I&#8217;m routinely amazed by professionals like Miller who exhibit a total lack of professionalism when using social media &#8211; Twitter in particular.
