After signalling its intention to act<\/a>, the FDA finally\u00a0made it official: warning letters have been sent to\u00a0several manufacturers of homeopathic HCG weight loss supps<\/a>.\u00a0In today’s\u00a0announcement, the\u00a0FDA described\u00a0it as the “first step” towards getting them off the online and retail market.<\/a><\/p>\n

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today issued seven Warning Letters to companies marketing over-the counter (OTC) HCG products that are labeled as \u201chomeopathic\u201d for weight loss.<\/p>\n

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone produced by the human placenta and found in the urine of pregnant women. HCG is FDA-approved as an injectable prescription drug for the treatment of some cases of female infertility and other medical conditions.<\/p>\n

The letters warn the companies that they are violating federal law by selling drugs that have not been approved, and by making unsupported claims for the substances. There are no FDA-approved HCG drug products for weight loss.<\/p>\n

The joint action is the first step in keeping the unproven and potentially unsafe products from being marketed online and in retail outlets as oral drops, pellets, and sprays.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Personally, I think it’s long overdue: homeopathic anything<\/em> is a total fraud, so even if HCG was scientifically proven to enhance fat loss (above and beyond what the usual, very-low-calorie diet accomplishes), these products would still<\/em> be completely bogus.<\/p>\n

But – sad\u00a0to say – I have an issue\u00a0with the way the FDA\u00a0justified it. The agency\u00a0described the products as\u00a0“potentially unsafe” and “dangerous.” Suffice it to say, this is\u00a0nonsense. Unless the FDA has evidence\u00a0that they’re\u00a0NOT homeopathic; or are contaminated in some way; then the products are\u00a0utterly harmless.\u00a0It’s implicit in the term “homeopathic.”\u00a0As has been<\/a> demonstrated<\/a> ad nauseam<\/a>, homeopathic supps contain no detectable active ingredients at all – they’re waaaay\u00a0too dilute. They’re strictly placebos: water (in the case of liquids) or sugar pills.<\/p>\n

Homeopathic HCG is\u00a0definitely\u00a0useless and the claims are so much hot air.\u00a0The\u00a0FDA is doing\u00a0consumers a favor (whether\u00a0some of them\u00a0know it or not)\u00a0by\u00a0swinging the clown hammer.
