{"id":4983,"date":"2011-06-22T05:50:15","date_gmt":"2011-06-22T03:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=4983"},"modified":"2015-02-16T08:58:16","modified_gmt":"2015-02-16T13:58:16","slug":"ama-condemns-competitive-eating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/ama-condemns-competitive-eating\/","title":{"rendered":"AMA Condemns Competitive Eating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/health\/2011\/06\/21\/ama-to-competitive-eaters-put-down-that-hot-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good for the AMA.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In addition to resolutions backing the individual mandate to purchase health insurance and to adopt a bill of rights for medical residents, delegates to the AMA\u2019s annual meeting have approved a resolution recognizing \u201ccompetitive speed eating as an unhealthy eating practice with potential adverse consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The background information given to the AMA\u2019s voting delegates said that speed eating \u201ccondones excessive consumption, junk food consumption and a waste of resources that could be used to fight hunger.\u201d (That background info doesn\u2019t become official policy and wasn\u2019t voted upon.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Admittedly, the medical evidence that\u00a0competitive eating has &#8220;potential adverse\u00a0consequences&#8221; is fairly thin.\u00a0But even if competitive eaters\u00a0are\u00a0no more or less healthy than other folks, I&#8217;d still find the &#8220;sport&#8221; worthy of condemnation&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/overeating-as-asport\/\" target=\"_blank\">for reasons that I noted 3 years ago<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Eating contests have \u2013 of course \u2013 been around for ages as a form of entertainment, like at county fairs and such. But that you would actually have a formal organization, with \u201cstars\u201d and \u201cfans\u201d \u2013 and rankings and statistics and what not takes it to a whole new level of strangeness. As a culture, we\u2019re already too obsessed with food, especially bad food\u2026this is just one more manifestation of that. It\u2019s one more degree of separation between food\/eating and human health\/nutrition\u2026which isn\u2019t psychologically healthy, either.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good for the AMA.
