{"id":3693,"date":"2010-07-10T00:05:02","date_gmt":"2010-07-09T22:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=3693"},"modified":"2015-02-15T09:25:20","modified_gmt":"2015-02-15T14:25:20","slug":"study-sweet-and-salty-nutritional-content-and-analysis-of-baby-and-toddler-foods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/study-sweet-and-salty-nutritional-content-and-analysis-of-baby-and-toddler-foods\/","title":{"rendered":"Study &#8211; Sweet and Salty: Nutritional Content and Analysis of Baby and Toddler Foods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jpubhealth.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/early\/2010\/06\/28\/pubmed.fdq037.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A recent study published in the Journal of Public Health<\/a> should raise a few eyebrows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Background <\/strong>\u00a0To critically examine baby and toddler food products sold in Canada for their sugar and sodium content, and to assess these in light of current recommendations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methods<\/strong>\u00a0 Baby and toddler foods (<em>n<\/em> = 186) were coded for various attributes, including \u2018Nutrition Facts\u2019 label data. Four \u2018categories\u2019 of baby\/toddler foods were analyzed against their \u2018adult\u2019 counterparts for sugar and salt to reveal whether a \u2018halo effect\u2019 attributed to baby\/toddler food is warranted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong>\u00a0 63% of products have either high levels of sodium or an excessive proportion of calories coming from sugar. Over 12% of products had moderate or high levels of sodium; over 53% of products derive &gt;20% of their calories from sugar. Baby and toddler foods were not found to be nutritionally superior\u2014in terms of sodium or sugar\u2014to their adult counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions<\/strong>\u00a0 Baby and toddler foods are currently overlooked in the public, and public policy, discussions pertaining to dietary sodium and sugar.
