{"id":3650,"date":"2010-06-29T22:32:32","date_gmt":"2010-06-29T20:32:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=3650"},"modified":"2015-02-15T09:26:01","modified_gmt":"2015-02-15T14:26:01","slug":"puttin-ritz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/puttin-ritz\/","title":{"rendered":"Puttin&#8217; Down the Ritz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was doing my usual &#8220;thing&#8221; this morning &#8211; checking out my favorite blogs while cracking open pistachios (my fave snack) &#8211; when my eye was caught by a\u00a0blog banner\u00a0ad for\u00a0&#8220;Ritz Crackerfuls.&#8221; In addition to a pic of the cracker on the front of the box, there were also images of a stalk of wheat and a chunk of cheese &#8211; which illustrated the &#8220;Made with Real Cheese!&#8221; and &#8220;6g of Whole Grain&#8221; label claims.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the earthy-but-sophisticated look of the ad, it wasn&#8217;t hard to cut through the BS. My first thought was &#8220;Oh, spare me.&#8221; I mean, c&#8217;mon &#8211;\u00a0<strong>six<\/strong> grams of whole grains???<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Whoopti-doo. The current\u00a0federal dietary\u00a0recommendations are for a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">minimum<\/span> of 3 <strong>ounces<\/strong> of whole grains\/day. An ounce is equal to 28.3g.\u00a0\u00a0That works out to\u00a0at least\u00a085 grams of whole grains\/day.\u00a0Six grams is a drop in the bucket.*<\/p>\n<p>Even worse, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snackworks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nabisco&#8217;s\u00a0product page<\/a> clearly implies that Ritz Crackerfuls is a\u00a0great snack choice:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Looking for a satisfying snack that&#8217;s perfect in between meals? Try Ritz Crackerfuls! Made with real cheese and 5 grams of whole grain per serving, it&#8217;s the snack that will help keep you satisfied until your next meal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Uh-huh &#8211; it&#8217;s &#8220;perfect&#8221;\u00a0 and will keep you &#8220;satisfied.&#8221; Unlike &#8211; say &#8211; a piece of fruit, or &#8211; God forbid &#8211; my (natural) pistachios.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.snackworks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let&#8217;s\u00a0take closer look at what this &#8220;perfect&#8221; snack has to offer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>UNBLEACHED ENRICHED FLOUR, WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT FLOUR, PALM AND\/OR SOYBEAN AND\/OR CANOLA OIL, RESISTANT CORN MALTODEXTRIN, SUGAR, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED AND\/OR PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL, MALTODEXTRIN, SEMISOFT CHEESES, CHEDDAR CHEESE POWDER, WHEY, SALT, LEAVENING (CALCIUM PHOSPHATE AND\/OR BAKING SODA), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CELLULOSE GUM, WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, LACTOSE, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, LACTIC AND CITRIC ACIDS, SOY LECITHIN, DRY CREAM, MONOSODIUM PHOSPHATE, NATURAL FLAVOR, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, ARTIFICIAL COLOR (YELLOW 5, YELLOW 6), CHEDDAR CHEESE, ANNATTO EXTRACT (VEGETABLE COLOR), SODIUM CASEINATE.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mmmmm&#8230; just like mother used to make. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s a long list, you don&#8217;t have to look much past the first ingredient &#8211; &#8220;unbleached enriched flour&#8221; to get a good feel for this product.\u00a0 &#8220;Unbleached enriched flour&#8221; is simply &#8220;code&#8221; for &#8220;white flour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Funny how white flour is the first ingredient of this &#8220;whole-grain&#8221; cracker, no?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it&#8217;s not so funny when you consider what a common practice this is.\u00a0Whenever a label claims a product is &#8220;multigrain&#8221; or &#8220;made with whole grain,&#8221;\u00a0 it&#8217;s a good bet that white flour is one of the\u00a0main ingredients.\u00a0 You\u00a0cannot go by cues such as\u00a0color (which can be faked with caramel coloring) or a &#8220;grainy&#8221; look (which can be affected by a sprinkle of rolled oats or whole grain flakes brushed on the surface) &#8211; you have to look at the ingredients to discern the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, I&#8217;ll happily admit that\u00a0&#8220;Crackerfuls&#8221; are\u00a0made with &#8220;real cheese,&#8221; although this adds very little from a nutritional perspective &#8211; the amounts of protein (2g) and calcium (6%)\u00a0provided by\u00a0the cheese-derived ingredients\u00a0are small. And do I need to add that half the cals in each serving of\u00a0 &#8220;Crackerfuls&#8221; come from fat (7g)?<\/p>\n<p>To put it bluntly,\u00a0Ritz Crackerfuls&#8217; appearance of wholesomeness\u00a0is a facade, just like it is for so many other snack foods.
