Authors Vickie Hallett and Lenny Bernstein have an obvious enthusiasm for health\/fitness. But I found<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/11\/23\/AR2009112303295.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> this short notice<\/a> annoying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Get Fit in 2010<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMonday, November 23, 2009; 7:03 PM<\/p>\n<p>New Year&#8217;s resolutions: It&#8217;s not too early to think about next year&#8217;s fitness goals! Send your New Year&#8217;s resolutions, including how and why you intend to stick to your routine in 2010, to <a href=\"mailto:misfits@washpost.com\">misfits@washpost.com<\/a>, and we&#8217;ll print some of the best in early January. We may even help you reach those goals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reality check time: January 1 is a completely arbitrary day on the calendar. If your goal is to get fit, then there&#8217;s zero point to waiting another 5 weeks &#8211; start NOW.\u00a0 After all, you will still be the same person you were on Jan. 1, that you were on Dec. 31.\u00a0 Even worse, you will have spent the preceding weeks\u00a0<strong>reinforcing<\/strong> the habits you presumably want to change.\u00a0This isn&#8217;t\u00a0a recipe for long-term success, which may be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2007\/dec\/28\/sciencenews.research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">why New Year&#8217;s fitness resolutions tend to fail abysmally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So get moving &#8211; as of yesterday! If you make a fitness resolution for 2010 at all, it should be to continue\u00a0what you&#8217;ve already started.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00a0usually enjoy the &#8220;MisFits&#8221; column in the Washington Post.
