{"id":2639,"date":"2009-09-18T04:35:12","date_gmt":"2009-09-18T02:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=2639"},"modified":"2015-12-07T11:50:47","modified_gmt":"2015-12-07T16:50:47","slug":"study-sugar-water-bad-dumb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/study-sugar-water-bad-dumb\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;if you need a study to tell you sugar water is bad for you than you are probably dumb.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOL &#8211; I didn&#8217;t write that, just so you know.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s one of the comments posted in response to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article24555484.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article in the Sacramento Bee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A sweeping statewide study released today points to soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages as one of the main reasons why we are fat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the first time, we have strong scientific evidence that soda is one of the \u2013 if not the largest \u2013 contributors to the obesity epidemic,&#8221; Dr. Harold Goldstein, executive director of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;Bubbling Over: Soda Consumption and Its Link to Obesity in California&#8221; \u2013 a joint effort by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research \u2013 interviewed 42,000 Californians of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The study found that 24 percent of adults drink one or more non-diet sodas a day, and these adults are 27 percent more likely to be overweight.<\/p>\n<p>The results for children were worse, researchers said. Sixty-two percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 and 41 percent of children ages 2 to 11 imbibe at least one sugar-sweetened drink a day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/healthpolicy.ucla.edu\/publications\/search\/pages\/detail.aspx?PubID=104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The report is here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Soda is pretty ubiquitous.\u00a0 I can recall when my daughter,\u00a0Nick, was in elementary school.\u00a0 Her class was doing a unit on nutrition, and the teacher asked the kids to raise their hands if they had soda in the refrigerator at home.\u00a0 Nick was only one of three kids in the class who didn&#8217;t raise her hand&#8230; and after class, her friends asked her &#8220;what do you drink?&#8221;\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t mocking her &#8211; they\u00a0were genuinely curious.\u00a0 Even worse, she was later asked the same question by her best friend&#8217;s mother!<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s more to the soda problem, unfortunately.\u00a0 Not\u00a0only are a lot of empty (sugar)\u00a0calories being consumed, but more nutritious foods\u00a0may be\u00a0displaced from the diet as a result.\u00a0 Excess sugar + suboptimal nutrition represents a double whammy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s bad enough when the drinkers are adults, but even worse when they&#8217;re\u00a0children.\u00a0 I thought this quote from the story:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I have seen a number of children who come into the doctor&#8217;s office with soda in their baby bottle,&#8221; said Dr. Ulfat Shaikh, a pediatrician who works at UC Davis Children Hospital&#8217;s weight management clinic. &#8220;That, frankly, is frightening.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>was pretty damn chilling.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, the newspaper commenter has a point: there&#8217;s little here that we didn&#8217;t already know.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s the way the game is played: you need numbers in order to move the public policy ball towards the goal.\u00a0 So good on the State of California: more like this, please!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOL &#8211; I didn&#8217;t write that, just so you know.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s one of the comments posted in response to this article in the Sacramento Bee.
