{"id":250,"date":"2008-08-29T00:35:23","date_gmt":"2008-08-28T22:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/wordpress\/?p=250"},"modified":"2015-12-03T11:16:21","modified_gmt":"2015-12-03T16:16:21","slug":"hot-dogs-take-a-hit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/hot-dogs-take-a-hit\/","title":{"rendered":"Hot Dogs Take a Hit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;in a new ad campaign by\u00a0a vegetarian-oriented\u00a0research group, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcrm.org\/health\/cancer-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Cancer Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">[youtube:http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oPaxW3BrgIY]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the Associated Press<\/a>, the ad has touched a lot of\u00a0nerves, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hot-dog.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Hot Dog and Sausage\u00a0Council<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.org\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Cancer Society<\/a>, which beat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/newstopics\/howaboutthat\/2633467\/Hot-dogs-spark-patriotism-row-in-US.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a quick retreat from the controversy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>However, other nutritionists have stepped in to defend the hot dog. &#8220;My concern about this campaign is it&#8217;s giving the indication that the occasional hot dog in the school lunch is going to increase cancer risk,&#8221; said Colleen Doyle, the American Cancer Society&#8217;s nutrition director. &#8220;An occasional hot dog isn&#8217;t going to increase that risk.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The occasional hot dog?\u00a0 Probably not&#8230;but then again, that isn&#8217;t necessarily what we&#8217;re talking about here.\u00a0 Personally, I think this is a bit cowardly on the part of the ACS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Now, it&#8217;s completely fair to say that the ad <strong>is<\/strong> alarmist&#8230;it features kids, after all and &#8211; in reality &#8211; colorectal cancer in children is actually quite rare.\u00a0 According to the National Cancer Institute, the incidence is\u00a0one in a milliion\u00a0(younger than 20 years old)\u00a0in the United States annually, and is usually linked to family history\/heredity.\u00a0 The tag line at the end of the ad, &#8220;&#8230;can lead to <strong>adult<\/strong> cancers&#8221; doesn&#8217;t really clarify things either, since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennstatehershey.org\/web\/guest\/welcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most people diagnosed with the disease are in their 50&#8217;s and 60&#8217;s<\/a>.\u00a0 Thus, the link between childhood consumption of processed meats and adult cancer is more than a little fuzzy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Know what?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t care.\u00a0 While I&#8217;m no vegetarian, I&#8217;m also no fan of hot dogs: roughly 80% of the calories in your typical wiener come from fat&#8230;basically, it&#8217;s a\u00a0cylinder of\u00a0seasoned,\u00a0meat-flavored grease.\u00a0 One of my buds\u00a0from graduate school went to work in a local firm that made processed meats and quit after 3 months in disgust &#8211;\u00a0after seeing how they were made, she swore\u00a0she&#8217;d\u00a0never eat another hot dog again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In other words, I can&#8217;t think of anything positive about them, nutritionally speaking.\u00a0 They&#8217;re just nasty.\u00a0 And they&#8217;d still be nasty even if there wasn&#8217;t a <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ijc.22170\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strong correlation between increased risk of colorectal cancer and intake of processed meats<\/a>.\u00a0 Thus, while this ad may be over-the-top, it may just make kids &#8211; and their parents &#8211; think a little more about the connection between diet and long-term health.\u00a0 From where I sit, that can&#8217;t be bad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;in a new ad campaign by\u00a0a vegetarian-oriented\u00a0research group, \u00a0The Cancer Project.
