{"id":223,"date":"2008-08-07T03:18:42","date_gmt":"2008-08-07T01:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/wordpress\/?p=223"},"modified":"2015-02-14T17:37:02","modified_gmt":"2015-02-14T22:37:02","slug":"eggs-get-a-break","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/eggs-get-a-break\/","title":{"rendered":"Eggs Get a Break"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are eggs healthy or unhealthy?\u00a0 For years, doctors and dieticians told us that eggs should be avoided or severely limited, as\u00a0they were\u00a0loaded with\u00a0artery-clogging\u00a0cholesterol.\u00a0 That attitude has softened in recent years,\u00a0after researchers\u00a0determined that there&#8217;s\u00a0no clear cut association between egg consumption and cardiovascular risk\u00a0for healthy individuals.\u00a0 Still, eggs haven&#8217;t been given a pass: one recent study, for example, found an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18400720?ordinalpos=1&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">association between increased egg consumption and mortality<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Mainstream professionals are still cautious, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/HeartDiseaseRisks\/story?id=4218454\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conventional medical advice\u00a0remains fairly discouraging<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->It&#8217;s unfortunate, as eggs are nutritionally-dense,\u00a0and offer a lot of &#8220;bang&#8221; for your calorie &#8220;buck.&#8221;\u00a0 Thus, it was good to see the latest study, hot off the presses of the International Journal of Obesity: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18679412?ordinalpos=1&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Egg Breakfast Enhances Weight Loss<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the study, researchers compared two groups of overweight\/obese men and women on\u00a0reduced-calorie\u00a0diets.\u00a0 The first group ate a breakfast containing two eggs (5 days\/week, min.); while the second\u00a0ate an energy-equivalent,\u00a0bagel-based breakfast\u00a0instead.\u00a0 At the end of the 8 week trial, the egg dieters lost more weight ( an average of -2.63 vs -1.59 kg)\u00a0and had a 34% greater reduction in waist circumference than the bagel dieters.<\/p>\n<p>Even better: total cholesterol, HDL\/LDL cholesterol and triglycerides did not differ between the two groups.<\/p>\n<p>Why was the egg-containing diet more effective?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldegg.ca\/pdf\/Weight_Loss_And_Eggs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An earlier study by the same\u00a0researchers<\/a> suggested that an egg breakfast\u00a0provided greater satiety, and reduced subsequent energy intake.\u00a0 Whether this was due to the protein, fat, or some other property specific to eggs was not determined.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, this sounds just about right.\u00a0 Eggs contain a solid amount of high quality protein and fat.\u00a0 I\u00a0frequently chomp down on a couple of eggs first thing in the morning, and they keep me going for a much longer time than a carb-based breakfast does\u00a0(and &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/my-blood-test-annotated\/\" target=\"_blank\">as noted here<\/a> &#8211; my HDL and LDL cholesterol levels\u00a0are in great shape, as are other risk factors for cardiovascular disease).<\/p>\n<p>So skip the &#8220;Slim Fast,&#8221;
