{"id":2149,"date":"2009-07-02T06:35:39","date_gmt":"2009-07-02T04:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=2149"},"modified":"2015-02-15T00:33:34","modified_gmt":"2015-02-15T05:33:34","slug":"lifestyle-factors-responsible-for-a-lot-of-unnecessary-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/lifestyle-factors-responsible-for-a-lot-of-unnecessary-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Modifiable Lifestyle Factors Responsible for a Lot of Unnecessary Deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s basically the conclusion of <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1000058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new report from researchers affiliated with the Harvard School of Public Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the study was to come up with estimated mortality risks from 12 modifiable health\/lifestyle\/dietary factors: \u00a0high blood glucose, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and blood pressure; overweight\u2013obesity; high dietary trans fatty acids and salt; low dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids (seafood), and fruits and vegetables; physical inactivity; alcohol use; and tobacco smoking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1000058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><!--more-->Here&#8217;s the breakdown (both sexes):<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tobacco Smoking: ~467,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>High Blood Pressure: ~395,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>Overweight-Obesity: ~216,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>Physical Inactivity: ~191,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>High Blood Glucose: ~190,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>High LDL Cholesterol: ~113,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>High Dietary Sodium: ~102,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>Low Dietary Omega-3 Fatty Acids: ~84,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>High Dietary Trans Fatty Acids: ~82,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol Use: ~64,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>Low Intake of Fruits and Vegetables: ~58,000\/year<\/li>\n<li>Low Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (as a replacement for saturated fats): ~15,000\/year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the exception of smoking, these are all either directly or indirectly diet\/exercise-related.\u00a0 Even worse, according to the researchers, &#8220;40% or more of all deaths attributable to high LDL cholesterol, overweight\u2013obesity, high dietary trans fatty acids, low dietary PUFA and omega-3 fatty acids, low intake of fruits and vegetables, alcohol use, and smoking occurred before 70 y of age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, there&#8217;s a certain amount of uncertainty involved in making population estimates.\u00a0 Nonetheless, those are pretty scary numbers.\u00a0 It&#8217;s reasonably clear that a lot of lives are being shortened by factors that are, by and large, preventable, or at least modifiable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s basically the conclusion of a new report from researchers affiliated with the Harvard School of Public Health.
