{"id":1984,"date":"2009-05-31T02:26:25","date_gmt":"2009-05-31T00:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=1984"},"modified":"2015-02-13T08:35:16","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T13:35:16","slug":"whats-in-a-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/whats-in-a-name\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s in a Name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quite a lot, actually.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/telling-truth-explosion-supplement-review-sites-net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul&#8217;s\u00a0awesome post on phony supplement review sites<\/a> spawned a bit of discussion (both in the comments and via e-mail) about the importance of knowing WHO you&#8217;re getting information from.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about credibility: Paul and I both have our names out there on the\u00a0reviews posted on UltimateFatBurner.com &#8211;\u00a0which means that we can be held accountable for what we write.\u00a0 The authors behind a bogus site, on the other hand, are more likely to be anonymous &#8211; for obvious reasons.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0can be\u00a0true for other forms of internet &#8220;information&#8221; as well&#8230;including health\/fitness info.\u00a0 A perfect example of this is a site I stumbled over last week, titled &#8220;The Best Way To Exercise.com&#8221;.*<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I was asked about the site by a member of the &#8220;Fat Loss Revealed&#8221; forum.\u00a0 Naturally, I&#8217;d never heard of it, so I wandered on over to take a look&#8230;and damn near fell off my chair, laughing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a\u00a0multi-page ad for a\u00a0super-dee-dooper &#8220;secret&#8221;\u00a0workout program&#8230; and I gotta hand the author\u00a0credit for chutzpah.\u00a0 Anyone who could write this, has got big brass ones.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Finally&#8230; a Trainer You Can TRUST!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>World Renown&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Personal Trainer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Fitness Authority&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Health Professional&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Exercise Physiologist&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Neuromuscular Bioenergeticist&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Pick a title, any title&#8230; this is me &#8211; any and all.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t care what you call me &#8211; as long as you&#8217;re willing to listen.\u00a0 Who I am shouldn&#8217;t matter as much as what I know.\u00a0 <strong>To be honest, I&#8217;d actually rather maintain some degree of anonymity, so that the messenger doesn&#8217;t get in the way of the message<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Emphasis mine.<\/p>\n<p>Lemme get this straight&#8230;this\u00a0ad was written by a trainer\u00a0who&#8217;s &#8220;world renown&#8221; (sic) but prefers to remain anonymous so &#8220;the messenger doesn&#8217;t get in the way of the message&#8221;???<\/p>\n<p>Riiiiigggght&#8230; Call me suspicious, but this isn&#8217;t exactly the right way to win my trust.<\/p>\n<p>The only difference between this and\u00a0some anonymous review site, is that the author has the cojones to spin anonymity as a virtue!\u00a0 Nice try, but it&#8217;s completely bass ackwards:\u00a0\u00a0a\u00a0world renowned trainer&#8217;s\u00a0name\u00a0would ADD credibility to the message, not detract from it.\u00a0\u00a0Even if the name didn&#8217;t ring a bell, I could still &#8220;Google&#8221;\u00a0it for some independent verification.\u00a0 Self-proclaimed experts are a dime-a-dozen, after all. Why on Earth should I be &#8220;willing to listen&#8221; to\u00a0one if I can&#8217;t validate his\/her claims of expertise?<\/p>\n<p>And brother, does\u00a0the author\u00a0make claims!\u00a0 For example, s\/he&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>has the best certfication<\/li>\n<li>attended the best schools<\/li>\n<li>had the best grades in his \/her class<\/li>\n<li>is\u00a0&#8220;officially&#8221; certifiably smart<\/li>\n<li>has\u00a0written the best books with the best fitness secrets<\/li>\n<li>produced the best fitness training DVDs<\/li>\n<li>owns one of the best fitness centers in the country<\/li>\n<li>has millions of people watching him\/her online every month<\/li>\n<li>normally charges people $500 per hour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also learn that s\/he&#8217;s &#8220;won competitions&#8221; and &#8220;turned heads&#8221; &#8211; despite the fact that s\/he&#8217;s had to work&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>through and around a broken lumbar vertebra, rheumatoid arthritis, 8 years of undiagnosed Lyme disease, head-on rollover car accident&#8230; brain injury, broken bones, bruised ego&#8230; bouncing back time and time again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ok,\u00a0the brain injury part I believe&#8230; \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p>But seriously, I could just as easily claim I\u00a0have a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from M.I.T.;\u00a0was part of\u00a0the team that created the Hubble Space Telescope;\u00a0am\u00a0a\u00a0former chess grandmaster and a descendant\u00a0of Louis the 14th.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0complete BS, of course, but if I made these claims anonymously, how\u00a0could\u00a0anyone possibly check?<\/p>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s in a name?\u00a0 Like I said above: it&#8217;s about the source&#8217;s\u00a0credibility.\u00a0\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t matter whether\u00a0it&#8217;s a supp review site or an ad for a (pricey) &#8220;secret&#8221; fitness program &#8211; a credible author should be willing to have his\/her name associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>*I&#8217;m not linking to it on purpose &#8211; I have no intention of directing traffic over there (just in case).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quite a lot, actually.
