{"id":177,"date":"2008-06-19T20:36:35","date_gmt":"2008-06-19T18:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/wordpress\/more-on-the-placebo-effect\/"},"modified":"2015-02-12T21:05:53","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T02:05:53","slug":"more-on-the-placebo-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/more-on-the-placebo-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"More on the Placebo Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/06\/17\/AR2008061701032.html\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post has an article on the results of an interesting&#8230;and somewhat odd study<\/a> presented\u00a0at the Endocrine Society&#8217;s annual meeting.\u00a0 The study focused on the effects of human growth hormone (HGH) injections on athletic performance &#8211; but with a twist.\u00a0 The researchers\u00a0gave either HGH or a placebo to a group of 64 men and women who were recreational athletes between\u00a020 &#8211; 40 years of age.\u00a0 At the end of the two month study period, the subjects were asked to rate their performance improvement during the time they were receiving the injections, <strong>and to guess which group they were in<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ho and his team found that about half of the participants who received a placebo incorrectly assumed they had been given HGH. Gender played a significant role in such perceptions: the male placebo athletes were much more likely than the female athletes to have mistakenly thought they were in the HGH group.<\/p>\n<p>However, regardless of gender, athletes on placebos who thought they had taken HGH typically believed their performance had improved during the study.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, these &#8220;incorrect guessers&#8221; actually did improve, albeit minimally, in all measures of performance, including endurance, strength, power, and sprint capacity. In one category &#8212; high-jumping ability &#8212; the improvement was significant.<\/p>\n<p>People in the placebo group who correctly guessed that they had taken a placebo improved their performance by about 1 percent to 2 percent, Ho said.
