{"id":1766,"date":"2009-05-10T01:04:25","date_gmt":"2009-05-09T23:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=1766"},"modified":"2015-03-20T18:55:27","modified_gmt":"2015-03-20T22:55:27","slug":"teriyaki-terror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/teriyaki-terror\/","title":{"rendered":"Teriyaki Terror!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It doesn&#8217;t take much to turn a reasonably healthy meal into an unhealthy one, as we found out last night.<\/p>\n<p>John (the hubby)\u00a0and I hit the gym kinda late (for us) last night &#8211; about 6:00 p.m.\u00a0 We both did a cardio workout, plus some ab work&#8230;but cut the latter short, as John was getting hungry.\u00a0 Since it was already late, and we\u00a0knew we were\u00a0out of stuff at home, we decided to grab some take out, vs. shopping and cooking.<\/p>\n<p>We hit the Teriyaki Grill, as\u00a0it was close by and has\u00a0relatively decent\u00a0food (the entrees largely consist of grilled lean meat, veggies, steamed rice or noodles).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I ordered a salmon filet\u00a0for myself and a white chicken\/pork combo for John &#8211; then grabbed a cup of water and sat down at one of the tables with him\u00a0to wait.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As we were waiting, my attention was caught by a group that was dining in, which included a couple of fairly heavy dudes.\u00a0 After the server set their plates down, one of the\u00a0guys\u00a0picked up\u00a0the dispenser of teriyaki sauce on the table and started to pour the stuff on his food.\u00a0\u00a0Except he didn&#8217;t stop at just a drizzle or two&#8230;he kept on pouring.<\/p>\n<p>The dispenser was just like the ones used to hold pancake syrup in coffee shops like Denny&#8217;s or IHOP &#8211; and\u00a0was 2\/3 to 3\/4 full.\u00a0 And it was just like watching someone drench their pancakes with syrup, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally,\u00a0 he handed it off to the second guy, who did the same. Between the two of them, they completely drained the dispenser.\u00a0 I was incredulous.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calorieking.com\/foods\/calories-in-sauces-teriyaki-sauce_f-ZmlkPTY0MTAy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a single tablespoon of generic teriyaki sauce contains about 2.4g sugar and 690 mg sodium<\/a>.\u00a0 There was at least a cup (16 tablespoons)\u00a0in that dispenser when the two of them started pouring.\u00a0 Calorifically, it\u00a0wasn&#8217;t that big of an indulgence, but the sodium!!!\u00a0 Each of &#8217;em must have downed two days worth in just the one meal.\u00a0 Ugh.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it&#8217;s estimated that 77% of\u00a0the sodium in the average American diet is &#8220;hidden&#8221; in processed foods &#8211; just like that teriyaki sauce.\u00a0 Thus, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-living\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/sodium\/art-20045479?pg=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reducing excess sodium<\/a>\u00a0is one more benefit\u00a0of\u00a0limiting\u00a0them in your diet.\u00a0 Needless to state, I doubt if those guys\u00a0had any idea of how much they were consuming&#8230;which is the problem.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not the dangers you know about, but the ones that you DON&#8217;T, that\u00a0are more likely\u00a0do you in.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It doesn&#8217;t take much to turn a reasonably healthy meal into an unhealthy one, as we found out last night.
