{"id":1252,"date":"2009-03-20T00:56:51","date_gmt":"2009-03-19T22:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ultimatefatburner.com\/?p=1252"},"modified":"2009-03-20T00:56:51","modified_gmt":"2009-03-19T22:56:51","slug":"theres-a-reason-why-low-gi-meals-are-more-satisfying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/theres-a-reason-why-low-gi-meals-are-more-satisfying\/","title":{"rendered":"There&#8217;s a Reason Why Low-GI Meals are More Satisfying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2009\/03\/090317201139.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new research being presented at the Society for Endocrinology meeting&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Eating a meal with a low GI (glycaemic index) increases gut hormone production which leads to suppression of appetite and the feeling of fullness.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->&#8230;Dr Reza Norouzy and colleagues at King\u2019s College London looked at the effects of a single low versus high GI meal on gut hormone levels in twelve healthy volunteers. \u00a0Each participant ate an identical medium GI meal for dinner, fasted overnight, and was given either a low (46) or high (66) GI meal for breakfast.\u00a0 Blood samples were then taken every 30 minutes for 150 minutes, and levels of the gut hormone glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and insulin measured.\u00a0 GLP-1 is a hormone produced by the gut that has been shown to cause a feeling of fullness and suppression of appetite(2).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers who ate a low GI breakfast had 20% higher blood plasma levels of GLP-1 (area under curve = 4839\u00b11831) and 38% lower levels of insulin (10088\u00b14757), compared to those who had consumed a high GI breakfast (3865\u00b11630 and 16245\u00b17600 respectively). \u00a0These results show for the first time that eating a low GI meal increases GLP-1 production and suggest a physiological mechanism as to why a low GI meal makes you feel fuller than a high GI meal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Dr. Norouzy put it&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GLP-1 is one of the most potent hormones for suppressing appetite.\u00a0 Our results suggest that low GI meals lead to a feeling of fullness because of increased levels of GLP-1 in the bloodstream.\u00a0 This is an exciting result which provides further clues about how our appetite is regulated, and offers an insight into how a low GI diet produces satiety.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just one more reason to ditch the bagels or Corn Flakes at breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, probably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mendosa.com\/gilists.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the most definitive list\u00a0of GI values\u00a0was put together by diabetes activist David Mendosa.<\/a>\u00a0 It&#8217;s worth checking out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to new research being presented at the Society for Endocrinology meeting&#8230; Eating a meal with a low GI (glycaemic index) increases gut hormone production which leads to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[14,28],"tags":[149,723,743,754,760,789,929],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1252"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1252"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1252\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1252"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1252"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/ufb-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1252"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
