Liporexall Review: Patent Nonsense

On the Liporexall web site, the manufacturer stresses that all of the product ingredients are “patented (and patent-pending).”

So what? As detailed by Elissa in this blog post, the terms “patented” and “patent-pending” mean absolutely nothing when it comes to proving that a product actually works. In fact…

“A patent is simply a legally-recognized grant of property rights over an invention, formula, or design.”

Unfortunately, that doesn’t prevent retailers from using the term “patented” to sell products like Liporexall. They’re taking advantage of a common misconception: that the patent process involves some sort of critical demonstration or proof of a product’s effectiveness. That’s not the case at all. Let me sum it up…

“Patented” DOES NOT equal “proven to work.” And a product like Liporexall, which includes patented ingredients, does not necessarily work, either.

With that said, let’s have a look at the Liporexall formula. Each capsule contains 300 mcg of ChromeMate (a proprietary form of chromium picolinate), and a 460.5 mg blend of the 10 ingredients I will discuss in a moment.

First, however, let me say this…

The medicinal plants, food compounds and herbs that are typically found in weight loss products are much like pharmaceutical drugs; they need to be present in a potent enough dosage to have any effect. 460.5 mg simply isn’t big enough to accomodate “clinically-proven” dosages of more than a couple of ingredients. All the rest are label dressing; they’re there simply to impress – not help – you.

Let me explain this more fully using one of Liporexall’s ingredients, Tonalin® as an example. Tonalin® is the patented form of CLA, or conjugated linoleic acid. A recent meta-analysis (see American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 85, No. 5, 1203-1211, May 2007) concluded…

“Given at a dose of 3.2 g/d, CLA produces a modest loss in body fat in humans.”

Great, right? Nope. Hardly. 3.2 grams/day is 3200 mg. If Liporexall contained nothing but Tonalin®, it would take 3 and a half days worth of pills to give you the amount of CLA shown to be helpful in clinical trials. But this is physically impossible: Tonalin® is only one of 10 ingredients in the blend, and by virtue of simple mathematics, cannot be present in the formula anywhere near a dosage strong enough to be effective.

As you’ll see, that’s an issue common to the Liporexall formula. Here’s the lowdown on the remaining ingredients…

1. Infinergy™ Caffeine Malate: Besides the “boost” it provides, caffeine exhibits modest thermogenic activity, and is therefore a common ingredient in most weight loss products and diet pills. Much ado has been made by retailers about this “special” form of caffeine (which is bonded with malic acid). They claim it outperforms the regular stuff. Unfortunately, there’s no published data to validate these claims. In reality, dicaffeine malate may work as well as, better than, or not as well as, regular caffeine.

If any ingredient is properly dosed in this formula, it’s likely to be this one! Most diet pills are great sources of caffeine, since users can “feel” it “working.”

2. SuperCitrimax® (Garcinia cambogia): The good news is that there is a study (see J Med. 2004;35(1-6):33-48) that validates SuperCitrimax’s modest weight loss properties. Unfortunately, it was performed with 2,800 mg of ingredient (and the individuals participating were restricted to a 2,000 calorie per day diet—they also walked 30 minutes per day, 5 days out of 7).

We’re back to the same issue again; if Liporexall contained nothing but SuperCitrimax®, it would take 3 days worth of pills to get the dose shown effective in the study.

3. Advantra-Z® (synephrine): After ephedra became illegal, retailers scrambled to find an effective alternative, and at one time, synephrine was thought to be it. However, clinical studies have not been kind to synephrine showing it demonstrates relatively insignificant weight loss effects (for the full review and accompanying clinical references, click here!).

4. PinnoThin™ (Korean Pine Nut Oil): This ingredient is also included as an appetite suppressant (it is thought to stimulate several appetite suppressing hormones—cholecystokinin and glucagon-like peptide 1).

The only published study I could find on this ingredient (see Lipids Health Dis. 2008 Feb 28;7:6) demonstrated mediocre results at best. I asked our scientific and technical advisor Elissa to have a closer look at the study and she reported…

“The results are pretty underwhelming – 2 g of Pinnothin taken 30 min before a buffet lunch reduced food intake by 9% – by weight in grams – and energy intake by 7%. The latter figure averaged to a whopping 50 calories.”

Notice too that the study used 2 grams (2,000 mg) of ingredient.

5. Phase 2® (white kidney bean extract): Advertised as a “carb blocker”, a recent UCLA study on Phase 2® concluded…

“Clinical trends were identified for weight loss, inches lost from the waist, energy, and decrease in triglycerides, although statistical significance was not reached. The reason that significance was not achieved was the small number of subjects who completed the study and the wide variability of the results within each group. Further studies with larger numbers of subjects are necessary in order to definitively demonstrate effectiveness.”

Whoop-tee-do. Hardly a weight loss miracle.

6. NeOpuntia® (prickly pear cactus): The Liporexall web site claims it can promote fat excretion by 27%, a claim based largely on this ingredient’s ability to attract fat and bind with it. They neglect to mention that the participants in the referenced study received 1600 mg of NeOpuntia® with each meal. That’s 4,800 mg of this ingredient per day—more than 5 times the total of ALL the ingredients in this formula.

7. 7-Keto®: A metabolite of DHEA, a steroid hormone produced naturally by the bodies of both men and women. The good thing about 7-Keto® is that it displays no apparent side effects (i.e. no conversion to testosterone or estrogen, and no effect on the sex hormones).

What’s promising about this ingredient is its positive effect on thyroid hormone levels in obese people — again, without any adverse effects of any kind (see Journal of Exercise Physiology, Volume 2, Number 4, October 1999, J Nutr Biochem. 2007 Sep;18(9):629-34. Epub 2007 Apr 5, Current Therapeutics, (7):435-442 2000).

The dosage for these studies was 100 mg, given twice a day. Theoretically, there may be enough 7-Keto® in Liporexall to be effective, but I highly doubt it, since its listed 8th on the ingredients label (by law, ingredients must be listed by prominence).

8. ForsLean®: A patented extract of Coleus forskohlii, a cAMP stimulator. cAMP is a “second messenger.” In other words, this compound is required to “spark” many intercellular processes. An increased concentration of cAMP can have such “total-body” effects as raised thyroid hormone levels and increased fat burning.

While the effects of Coleus forskohlii and a corresponding positive effect on weight loss have been established in one study (Journal of Obesity Research August 2005, “Body Composition and Hormonal Adaptations Associated With Forskolin Consumption In Overweight and Obese Men”), the results were not overwhelming.

Another study was less positive (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. 2(2):54-62, 2005). It concluded…

“Results suggest that CF (coleus forskohlii) does not appear to promote weight loss but may help mitigate weight gain in overweight females with apparently no clinically significant side effects.”

Incidentally, this study used 500 mg daily (10% CF extract).

9. Bioperine®: A pepper extract, Bioperine is usually included in products for its ability to increase the bioavailability of certain ingredients. And yes, there is published evidence to validate this claim (see Planta Med. 1998 May;64(4):353-6).

10. ChromeMate® (chromium polynicotinate): Chromium plays a role in regulating insulin function and as such, is a common ingredient in many weight loss products. Clinical data validating chromium’s weight loss is contradictory, although one study did indicate this particular form of chromium is beneficial. Nonetheless, chromium is  no weight loss miracle.

At the end of the day, Liporexall is an extremely expensive, over-hyped product. I doubt it delivers any more than caffeine and ChromeMate in dosages that are helpful. And, as discussed already, any of the ingredients that have been shown to be helpful for weight loss are not present anywhere near the dosage they need to be. Other ingredients—Advantra-Z®, Phase 2® and PinnoThin®—offer so little in the way of benefits even at a full dose (which of course, is not present in this formula), all they do is take up valuable capsule real estate.

Bottom line? I’m having a hard time finding anything positive to say about Liporexall. Obviously, these marketers will do and say anything in their attempt to get you to purchase their product.

That’s good enough reason NOT to do so, in my opinion.

Liporexall Summary

  • Contains some useful ingredients.

  • Most ingredients are “label dressing”
  • Overpriced.
  • Many ingredients are underwhelming. Even is they were supplied in validated doses, this product would still fail to impress.

  1. I think all these review sites are connected. Hmmm …could it be a Liporexall conspiracy? We’ll see. I’ve posted a few reviews on this pill and so far they all say “waiting for moderation”. All I have to say is they haven’t worked for me at all. No energy, no appetite decrease… nothing!

Editor’s comments: It’s possible all the “fake” review sites are connected. But they are not connected with this one. Real-Customer-Comments.com is the only web site that posts what consumers really have to say – positive and negative.

  2. I totally agree with Rosa. After trying Liporexall and not losing ANY weight, I attempted to leave feedback on the ‘nominated’ website. That was four weeks ago and my message is still being moderated!! I tried this product for 8 weeks and didn’t lose a pound, waste of time and money.

  4. I have found Liporexall a disappointment. No appetite decrease, no extra energy, no weight loss! I find this drug to be a waste of money! I am sorry I invested in this. I have used the entire bottle, so I did give it a try and nothing!

  6. 10 days with liporexall and lost 3 pounds. I think that is due to my diet, not the pill. I sent the company an email to ask about the refund, and have yet to hear back from them.

I tried Xenadrine RFA-X and it did curb my appetite alot, but I sweated like a pig all day!

  7. I have been taking Liporexall for 3 weeks and haven’t had any decrease in hunger, no weight loss, NOTHING. It doesn’t give me increased energy or a mood lift either. I’m finishing the first bottle and sending the second one back for a refund. What a disappointment.

  8. Ugh, This is only my fourth day taking liporexall and I was so excited to take it! BUT, with all the hype from customer reviews I thought wow I am going to lose weight! BUT again, nothing so far. Haven’t seen the least bit of a result. In fact it makes me hungrier and eat a lot more! I will say this, it pushed me to work out longer, I think, that may have just been my determination to lose weight! Doing it with diet and exercise, and nothing!

I am 19 5’7″ and about 157 lbs. Could someone recommend to me a good way to lose weight fast? A good pill that I won’t WASTE my money on? I am in college and don’t have a lot of money to throw out.

Editor’s comments: Taylor, there’s no way to lose weight fast. The people who are telling you there is are the ones selling you something. Losing weight is simply about consuming fewer calories than you require, exercising regularly, and if possible, building some lean muscle mass (which contributes to an elevated metabolism).

  9. Used Liporexall for over a month. Developed serious pain around my knee area (on the inside of the knee area). My daughter used it and developed pain around her knee also – in a different location than mine, but in the muscle and tissue area. She did not use it as long as I did. We both have gone to the doctor and got x-rays. Seems the pain is not in the joint, but in the muscle and tissue around the knee.

Maybe we should have waited to see if there would be clinical trials and reviews, but like most everyone, we saw the reviews on line. They were all positive and promoted the patented products, which I bought into. Lost a few pounds, but I think it was from my exerecise routine. By the way, it did not make me sleepy or jittery. I only took it once a day though. It seemed to have increased my energy level some.

  12. I had starting taking this product about 2 days ago and I am going to stop and try to get my money back. Immediately after taking the pills I have develop this pain in my knees. I do not get any energy from taking the pills and the knee pain is not worth it anyway. Many of the sites that brag about this product are fake. I have submitted comments in reference to my knees and none of them are being posted. Do not waste your money people!!!!!!

  13. I was absolutely skeptical about ordering this product because I tried the acai pills and that crap didn’t work at all. Then I finally decided to try Liporexall, What’s the worst that could happen?

Well I’ve been taking it for 2 weeks not and lost 8 pounds already. The urge to eat is gone which kinda feels weird but I like it. The only exercise I get right now is walking back and forth to work twice a day. I will start working out in the evenings 5 days a week starting tomorrow and see how much more weight I lose.

When I started I was 251 pounds and now I’m 243. I’m hoping to make it to at least 220 by April 2011 and 200 by June 2011. So far so good Liporexall…thanks.

  14. I’m about 2 weeks into this product. I wasn’t expecting much because I don’t have a ton of weight to lose. I’m mostly trying to loose 5-10 pounds for my wedding. After 2 weeks, I haven’t really lost any weight. I have noticed that my cravings for snacks has decreased quite a bit.

As of 2 weeks, I’m indifferent about this product and definitely undecided if I will buy another month’s supply.

  16. Today is my first day taking Liporexall. I have been taking RX6 45 CAPSULES by BPI for a month but had to stop, I waited a day to start this product and I am confused. I have absolutely NO energy on these pills I barely made it through my work out and took a nap right after?!?!?!

One of key ingridients:•Infinergy Dicaffeine Malate- Is essentially Caffeine with malic acid which is proven to optimize energy, promote thermogenesis and increases focus.

On my way to work i had a large DD cup of coffee to actually make it to work.

I am not looking to loose weight just get as lean as possible I am in pretty good shape; I follow a clean diet and work out 5X a week.

    I was sold on this:
    1.Build Lean Muscle
    2.Burn Fat
    3.Block Fat Absorption and
    4.Suppress Appetite

Did I buy the wrong product? Is this normal? Is there not enough mg of the ingredient to give you that bust?

Editor’s comments: Lissi, there’s no clinical evidence that caffeine malate is any more effective than “regular” caffeine for weight loss, energy or what have you. Caffeine does have demonstrated thermogenic properties, but they are relatively mild. If you’re looking for a boost, Liporexall is pretty tame stuff compared to RX6, which contains more potent stimulants. For more on Liporexall, see the full review.

  17. So I have been taking these pills for almost 2 weeks and well the first week I felt sleepy. I literally took them before my lunch meal.

I later ate and right after I fell asleep!

I thought this pill was suppose to give you an energy boost butt it did the opposite for me.

I even felt “energy less” to workout!

I must admit though that it does suppress the appetite however when I do get hungry, I feel like I haven’t eaten anything for days and eat starvingly :s

Nevertheless, this being my 2nd week of using the pill I do feel lighter but not have lost any weight as yet. I work out doing zumba 5 days a week but no results yet.

I still have my hopes up though so will try it out till the month is up. Will keep you updated.

  18. This product does not live up to the manufacturers promises of weight loss. I did give it two stars; one for each area it did perform ok in which is decreased appetite and slight performance enhancement at the gym aka “energy”. I took every pill in the bottle and lost zero pounds. This was incorporated with going to the gym 4 days a week, working at 85% plus, and incorporating weight lifing. This product does not work for weight loss.

  19. I have been taking Liporexall for a month and I have lost 7 pounds, an amount they claim you can lose with three day slim down. It does give me a boost during workouts. Right now I am working over 40 hours a week between two jobs and taking 13 credits (4 summer classes) so time at the gym is very hard to squeeze in, but both of my jobs are very physically demanding. I am fairly unsatisfied because the website claims “effortlessly lose 3-5 pounds per week!” and had I lost, effortlessly, just two pounds per week I’d be down ten pounds.

  20. I have been taking Liporexall for a month and just finished my first bottle. I have been satisfied with the energy it has given me and the appetite suppression. I have lost 7 pounds. I have lost 1 1/2 inches from my waist, 1/2 in around my arms, 3/4 inch around my thigh and an inch and a half around my chest. Although I am hoping for more pounds lost, I am satisfied with the inches I have lost and hope that the number of pounds lost will increase with bottle number 2. I will be sure to update you again when bottle two is gone.

I am 19 years old and have tried around 6 different products over a couple years and I have never looked so beautiful having taken this product.

I am currently working with my bank in an attempt to get my $ back, as well as filing a report w/the BBB.

  25. You guys need to stop relying on these diet pills. There’s no such thing as miracle pills. The only miracle out there is exercising, control what you eat and maintain it. Noone can do this for you but yourself, if you don’t start now, what makes you think you’ll start later?. Have a great day!

  29. I started Liporexall on the 5th of November this year. Tried Phenphedrine approx 18mpnths ago and lost loads with the first bottle but had nothing but stomach cramps and no weight loss with the second bottle. Went to diet pill universe and they asked me to fill out a questionaire to see which pill would work best for me and they came up with liporexall. Obvipusly was skeptical like everyone is because I always assume they just suggest the tablet thet’re endorsing at the time buttook the questionnaire again submitting different detailsand they suggested a different pill. ANYWAY with Liporexall I’ve lost 7 pounds in one week. I don’t think the pill itself has made me lose weight but it’s definitely controlled my hunger! I also joined a site called loseit.com and they ask you to submit your measurements, ask how much weight you want to lose per week and then tell you the amount of calories u should take in a day to reach your goal. I’ve also started swinging a 6kg kettle bell 100 times everyday. Everyone has noticed the difference. So it’s worked for me even if all it’s done is control my hunger because without it I couldn’t have stuck to my recommended calorie intake and the minimal exercise that I do every day wouldn’t make a scrap of difference…

  31. I started taking this pill beacause i needed to lose just a little weight to make a deadline. I started taking it about two weeks ago and there were pros and cons, the negatives were i was very achey at first and always felt stiff, didnt really give me much energy but more a less kept me the same energy wise, and it says to decrease your appetite, yeah that didnt happen but on the positive i have already lost 5 pounds but keep in mind i have also been going to gym as well as taking this pill. I take two a day and only one on the weekends. hope this has helped some people, all in all for what i paid for it, im not going to complain

  32. These pills do work, but they aren’t magic pills that will increase weight loss with minimal effort. I’m 20, and I go to the gym 6 days a week and do intensive cardio. Normally I run about 30 minutes on the treadmill . I do 2.5 miles. I ran 3 miles in 25 minutes on this pill and doubled my calorie burn. I had more energy and literally felt no fatigue whatsoever. Also, my appetite has shriveled . I have to make myself eat something in the middle of the day since I’m still satisfied until around 6-7 in the evening. This pills works with and intensifies the effort you already should be putting in.

  33. I have been taking Liporexall for three days now. I work from 2pm-11pm and before I started taking it I would wake up at 7am or so and fall back asleep by 10am. Since I began taking it, I wake up, take the pill, eat breakfast and by the time I am finished I am in no way sleepy, groggy..just ready for the day! My job can be rather boring and I would often find myself eating out of boredom but since starting Liporexall, I don’t feel the desire to eat all of the junk. I’ve actually had to remind myself to eat dinner because I just don’t feel hungry. I have lost 2 lbs in the three days I’ve been taking it. Granted, I have a little more to lose; but who can complain about progress? Maybe I’ll be back to write another review after this bottle; however, for now, I am completely satisfied with my purchase!
