{"id":230,"date":"2009-03-11T06:27:26","date_gmt":"2009-03-11T13:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glossary.ultimatefatburner.com\/horny-goat-weed.php"},"modified":"2015-02-13T08:30:35","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T13:30:35","slug":"horny-goat-weed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/glossary\/horny-goat-weed\/","title":{"rendered":"Horny Goat Weed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The common name given to several species of Epimedium &#8211; a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jcimjournal.com\/en\/FullText2.aspx?articleID=624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to treat osteoporosis and impotence<\/a>\u00a0(aka &#8220;Yin Yang Huo&#8221;).\u00a0Horny Goat Weed is a reputed aphrodisiac, so is often added to &#8220;male&#8221; supplements designed to increase libido and\/or testosterone levels.<\/p>\n<p>The primary active compound, icariin, is described as a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16751992?ordinalpos=1&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testosterone mimetic<\/a>&#8221; in one, small Chinese (rodent) study. Horny goat weed&#8217;s reputed ability to enhance libido may be due to a different, non-hormonal mechanism, however. Several animal-based studies have found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17169663?ordinalpos=2&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">icariin is a PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitor<\/a>, similar in function to Viagra.
