Cissus has traditionally been used to treat a variety of ailments such as bone fractures, ulcers, wounds, indigestion and asthma. Animal studies have shown Cissus extracts may have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icmr.nic.in\/ijmr\/2006\/june\/0614.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gastroprotective effects<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14611887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contribute to bone health<\/a>, and have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12935320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidant\/antimicrobial activities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cissus quadrangularis has gained popularity in bodybuilding circles as an analgesic and palliative for weight lifting injuries. It has also been touted as a weight loss agent on the strength of two manufacturer-supported studies (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lipidworld.com\/content\/6\/1\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lipids Health Dis. 2007 Feb 4;6:4<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lipidworld.com\/content\/5\/1\/24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lipids Health Dis. 2006 Sep 2;5:24<\/a>).\u00a0 We have some questions about these studies, however, as a) weight\/fat loss\u00a0is typically not reported\u00a0in user reviews of\u00a0Cissus\u00a0by bodybuilders; and b) the studies were conducted by the owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/patft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;d=PALL&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;s1=7,175,859.PN.&amp;OS=PN\/7,175,859&amp;RS=PN\/7,175,859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a patent on Cissus as a weight loss agent<\/a> &#8211; a potential conflict of interest.\u00a0 We would prefer to see independent confirmation before recommending Cissus quadrangularis as a weight loss agent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>a.k.a. &#8220;Veld Grape&#8221; &#8211; a medicinal plant native to Africa, India, and other parts of Asia.
