For example, you may have seen agmatine included in some of the newer preworkout and strength promoting nitric oxide supplements &#8211; along with claims about how well it works for skin-tearing pumps, super-intense workouts and all the usual over-the-top nonsense we\u2019re used to seeing in sport supplement advertising.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ntQBQ1I2HIU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what is agmatine<\/a> exactly, and what potential applications does it have for body building or strength performance?<\/p>\n<p>Those are good questions.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s talk about agamatine \u2013 what do we know about it, does it work, should you try it and so on.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Agmatine?<\/h2>\n<p>Agamatine is a metabolite of arginine \u2013 its technical name is decarbolyzed arginine &#8211; and a promising and interesting compound, although there is very little clinical data on it.<\/p>\n<p>What do we know about so far, as far as its use a sports performance and pump product? Well, here are the&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>4 Things You Need to Know about Agmatine<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> There is <strong>no<\/strong> clinical evidence either to support or disprove agmatine&#8217;s use a BB or sports performance supplement.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Zero. Zip. Nien. Nyet. Nada. Nothing.<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So all these various claims that you&#8217;re seeing about its incredible performance enhancing abiities are essentially being pulled out &#8220;thin air.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that agamine may provide to be a great supplement for body builders or may not, but as of right now, we really don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> There is research (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3015041\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9010916?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>) that suggests that agmatine has a NO-boosting vasodilating effect but these animal studies or ex-vivo \/ in-vitro laboratory studies, not human based studies.<\/p>\n<p>How it works isn&#8217;t entirely clear yet, although it may <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3015041\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stimulate the expression of one of the enzymes<\/a> (eNOS) required for the body to make more NO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> Agmatine is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8645212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not a nitric oxide precursor<\/a> like I have seen argued in a few placed online. In other words, it does not appear to work in a smiliar manner to arginine, despite being an arginine metabolite.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1217329\/pdf\/8645212.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it appears to be a mild inhibitor of NOSs<\/a> \u2013 the family on enzymes required to convert arginine into NO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25247837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It&#8217;s non-toxic and appears to be safe<\/a>, and can be justified under DSHEA and most supplement laws.<\/p>\n<p>And essentially, that\u2019s a big picture overview on what know about agamatine when it comes to its use as a body building supplement.<\/p>\n<p>Not a lot, is it?<\/p>\n<h3>A Couple of Quick Comments<\/h3>\n<p>Absence of evidence isn\u2019t the same as evidence of absence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, even if there\u2019s no evidence to support its use as a \u201cpump\u201d or sports performance product, it may nonetheless have some health\/wellness value; for instance there is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25287313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one small study on its use for major depressive disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jbc.org\/content\/289\/14\/9710.long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animal study<\/a> suggests possible weight loss effects!<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, anecdotal evidence \u2013 and by anecdotal I mean \u201cword of mouth\u201d commentary &#8211; suggests that most (although definitely not all) users think it does work as advertised.<\/p>\n<h3>Agmatine; The Bottom Line<\/h3>\n<p>So what\u2019s the bottom line on agmatine at this point?<\/p>\n<p>Its use as a sports performance is entirely based on anecdotal evidence.<\/p>\n<p>If you like the pump and it works for you, great!<\/p>\n<p>Just as long as you understand that there\u2019s no established science behind the claims made for it.<\/p>\n<p>A stronger argument can definitely made for the use of arginine or citrulline as a nitric oxide supplement, if you\u2019re more interested in using products that have some supporting science behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, this is where I\u2019m sticking\u2026 as I don\u2019t find the agmatine pump to be as pronounced as the one I get from either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/bodybuilding\/does-arginine-work.html\" target=\"_blank\">arginine<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ultimatefatburner.com\/bodybuilding\/citrulline-nitric-oxide.html\" target=\"_blank\">citrulline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe you feel differently?<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve used agmatine or a product containing it, please share you experience and leave your comments below \u2013 I know I\u2019d love to hear them as would our viewers.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and before I forget\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to take a moment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/UltimateFatBurner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to subscribe to our YouTube channel<\/a>, that would be great\u2026 it would really help me out.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for watching and I hope to see again really soon!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Agmatine is the new kid on the &#8220;nitric oxide&#8221; supplement block, and you&#8217;re starting to see it more and more often in popular pre-workout supplements and other performance enhancing offerings.
