Myoplex
Plus - Product Showdown
Myoplex,
EAS' meal replacement, (also available in lite and deluxe formulas),
is the reigning king of meal replacements.
It's
really very simple why... TASTE!
Myoplex
is the richest, creamiest, thickest, and very likely the best-tasting
meal replacement on the market. In a pinch, it's the brand I always
recommend the most -- simply because I know the vast majority of
people will enjoy the taste and consistency of the shake.
As
far as quality goes, Myoplex sits squarely in the middle, not the
best, and not the worst. Each shake contains 42 grams of protein
(from whey, milk, egg, and caseinate sources), and a variety of
other ingredients. Mixed in with a smattering of goodies, vitamins
and HCA, is a whole lot of corn syrup solids and maltodextrin. And
although these ingredients are a big contributor to taste, they
don't do much for the nutritional value of the shake.
This
is a shake best enjoyed when mixed in a blender. It's really the
best way to get the full benefit of this smooth, creamy shake. Careful
though, this stuff gets so thick so fast, leave it in for too long,
and you'll be digging it out with a trowel. Can you mix it up in
a shaker cup? Sure -- just mix up a half a shake at a time. Otherwise,
you'll end up with a big glob of solid muck at the bottom.
Basic
flavors? Vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry (which, believe it or
not, is delicious!). Recently, EAS introduced a chocolate lovers
pack (including Chocolate Mocha, Rich Dark Chocolate, Chocolate
Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Mint), and a Tropical Fruit Flavor
Pack (including Banana Cream Pie, Orange Jubilee, Pina Colada and
Peaches 'n Cream). Bottom line on the new flavors?...
The
tropical fruit flavors?... well, I ended up giving mine away, if
that's any indication. ;-) Of course, I'm just one person, so in
the best interest of an accurate review, I had my girlfriend try
them. Her verdict? Ho-hum, take-it-or-leave-it. She's still got
half a box sitting under the kitchen counter. In other words, they
aren't such a big hit with her either.
And
the chocolate lover's pack?...
Better,
but nothing fantastic -- I mean really -- how badly can anybody
screw up chocolate? My favorite is probably the Chocolate Mint.
My recommendation is to stick with the basic flavors. You can't
lose with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. If your store offers
them for sale individually you can experiment without being stuck
with a whole box of meal replacements you can't stand.
When
you're buying Myoplex, you're paying a substantial dollar for the
EAS brand. EAS is well-known and highly regarded in the nutritional
supplement industry. Expect to pay anywhere from US $38.00 to US
$54.00 (Canadians can expect to pay between CA $60-$90), for a box
of 20 packets. I don't recommend Myoplex Lite -- it's much too expensive
for what it is. If you'd like a lighter shake, simply mix up half
a packet instead of a whole one.
