Labrada's
Lean Body -- Product Showdown
If
you haven't heard of Lee Labrada's Lean Body meal replacements,
it's likely you will soon. This brand of shake comes in a wide variety
of delicious flavours - they're also available in a low carb formula,
and a specially formulated blend for women.
Put
Labrada head to head against Myoplex Plus, taste wise, and these
shakes fall a little short. Yes, they're still tasty. Yes, most
people will still enjoy them. And the Labrada shake has one of the
most comprehensive formulas of high quality ingredients of any shake.
They also don't use corn syrup solids in their formula. In other
words, there's more quality ingredients and less junk in the Labrada
shake. It's hard to get vitamins and amino acids to taste good without
adding a ton of crud (sweeteners) to the product. That's why the
taste element of the Labrada shake falls short in comparison to
the reigning king, Myoplex.
With
that said, I must emphasize... these are still good tasting shakes.
Although I've only tasted about three flavours, I didn't experience
any turn-offs, and my favorite remains the old standby, chocolate.
Labrada
Lean Body Shakes contain a ton of high quality ingredients - glutamine,
taurine, alpha-keto glutarate, EFAs -- stuff you don't generally
see in your run-of-the-mill meal replacements. There's also 45 grams
of protein from whey, milk, and caseinate sources, 28 grams of carbs,
and 1.5 grams of fat.
I
recommend mixing these shakes in the blender (they will mix up in
a shake cup, just mix up half the shake at a time to avoid the "glob
on the bottom" phenomenon). The blender works best... these
shakes aren't as thick and creamy as Myoplex, and generally need
all the help they can get.
In
general, these shakes represent the higher end (quality wise), of
the meal replacement spectrum. As such, they represent a good choice
for any weight loss, weight management, or muscle building program.
Labrada
meal replacements are usually available for a couple of dollars
less than what it would cost you for Myoplex. Somewhere in
the US$34- US$50 range. For some reason, Canadians will often find
it priced as much as CA$10 more than Myoplex. I've seen it selling
for CA$90+ a box. Absolutely ridiculous -- Canadians, don't pay
more than between CA$60 and CA$75 a box. Any more than that, and
it's highway robbery.
OK,
let's move on to...

Cytoplex!
