DHEA - Glossary

DHEA

DHEA is the abbreviation for dehydroepiandosterone, an androgen (“male” hormone) produced by the adrenal glands. DHEA is a prohormone, that can be converted to testosterone in the body, but is not a significant source of testosterone in men; nor does it significantly boost testosterone levels in men when taken in supplemental form.

DHEA is sold over-the-counter as an anti-aging supplement, as levels decline with age, although the benefits are still being debated.

There are a variety of chemical synonyms that can be used for DHEA, which makes it easy to “hide” in bodybuilding supplements.
