Remembering Dr. Atkins
On
April 17, Dr. Atkins passed away 9 days after suffering a
head injury after falling on the ice a few hundred feet from
his office, where believe it or not, he still saw patients
several times a week (Atkins was 72). Considering the impact
this man has had upon the dieting industry, not to mention
my own respect for Dr. Atkins and his "Diet Revolution",
I thought it appropriate to dedicate a portion of this newsletter
to him.
Dr
Atkins was a Cornell educated cardiologist, whose revolutionary
diet book, Dr Atkins' Diet Revolution was first published
in 1972 (it amuses me no end to hear "experts" refer
to the Atkins diet as a "fad" diet. 31 years of
success no longer qualifies this as a fad, I'm afraid!). As
you probably know, it was this book that took low-carb dieting
into the mainstream (Dr. Atkins was not the first person to
"discover" low-carb dieting).
Although
the mainstream dieting and medical community has always referred
to the Atkins diet as "quackery", several recent
research studies have validated the low-carb diet.
Duke
University researchers found that subjects on the low-carb
diet experienced greater weight loss (with a larger percentage
of that weight coming from fat as opposed to muscle), and
more dramatic improvements in blood lipid and cholesterol
levels than those on a typical low-fat diet (Source: American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 75:2002).
Despite
this, I watched health news reporters present largely negative
and biased testaments to the man last week.
My
biggest beef with this bunch is that it appears not a single
one of them has ever read Dr. Atkins diet. Most of their complaints
are always the same -- any diet that eliminates carbohydrates
means an elimination of fiber and vital nutrients -- anti-oxidants
and so on. Point is, the extreme carbohydrate restriction
period is only temporary and short-lived, plus dieters are
recommended to supplement with vitamins during the carbohydrate
reduction period of this diet. After this reduction period,
"friendly" carbohydrates are slowly re-introduced
into the diet.
Additionally,
no one ever mentions that the real carbohydrate culprits are
NOT the ones that are high in fiber and rich in micronutrients,
but refined grains products and sugars.
One
of the things I like most about Dr. Atkins' diet is the way
he "comes off" as an author. He truly seems concerned
about the reader's well-being, something not prominent in
other publications.
Bottom
line?
Dr.
Atkins' Diet isn't easy, and it's not perfect, but it works,
and it works very well.
Dr.
Atkins is also the author of another of my favorite books,
"Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer
To Drugs". It presents the scientific basis for the use
of vitamins, minerals, herbs and amino acids as treatment
for many of the chronic illnesses of today.
The
world lost a good man on April 17. I'm hoping that in the
near future, his work will finally be vindicated and recognized
as a viable and powerful weight loss solution.

Just When You Thought It Couldn't Get Worse!
Ugh.
Just
when you thought it couldn't get any worse, there's another
big reason to drop those extra pounds. A brand new study published
in the New England Journal of Medicine links being overweight
directly to an increased risk of certain cancers. The study
found that excess body weight may contribute to up to 20%
of all cancer deaths in women, and 14% in men. This translates
into 90,000 preventable deaths a year in the U.S. alone.
Disturbing
news indeed.
The
full results of the study can be viewed at the American Cancer
Society web site here...
