The Mysteries Of Yo-Yo Dieting Explained
Everybody who has tried to lose a pound of weight
has heard
the term "yo-yo dieting". And everyone knows exactly what
it means...
First, starve yourself to death until you've reached
your
weight loss goals. Once that's accomplished, revert back to
your old diet, gain all the weight back, and then some.
Enough to drive you crazy isn't it?
Well, today I'm going to explain yo-yo dieting, so
you'll never
have to endure it again -- what a relief, eh? ;-)
Are you ready? Great! Let's proceed...
The main problem with the typical diet is that it
reduces
calories TOO much (it's a common misconception that you must
be starving in order to lose weight). Agreed, caloric
intake must be reduced in order to lose weight, but it
cannot be reduced to TOO great an extent. Here's why...
>From an evolutionary standpoint, stored fat has
always
represented the body's last hope for survival, so it tends
to hold on to it zealously. When you starve yourself, your
body interprets this as a time of crisis, and is even less
likely to burn fat as fuel unless it absolutely has to.
OK, OK, I know... so far, so boring, right?
Hold on, I'm getting to the good stuff...
So instead of primarily burning fat as fuel on an
extremely
low calorie diet, the body tends to catabolize (break down)
lean tissue (muscle) to use instead.
Here's the problem with that...
Lean tissue (muscle) has a POSITIVE effect on the
body's
metabolism (caloric requirement at rest). Muscle requires
calories for fuel even at times of rest. Ergo the more
muscle you have, the higher your resting metabolism.
Conversely, as your lean body mass drops (the percentage of
your body composition that is made up of lean tissue, bones,
and internal organs, or more simply, "non-fat" weight)
so
does your metabolism.
-----SIDEBAR-----
Fat is an inert substance. It requires little
or no energy to sustain its presence in the
body, and has no positive effects on your
metabolism.
-----SIDEBAR-----
Let's outline a little scenario to explain things
further...
Suppose you need to lose 20 lbs. You steel your resolve,
lower your caloric intake to near-ridiculous levels, and
count the days until you've reached your goal. When you
finally attain it, how much farther are you really ahead?
Consider...
Depending on your genetic makeup, as much as 50% (and
perhaps even more) of that 20 lbs. of weight loss will have
been comprised of lean muscle tissue -- 10 lbs.
What does that mean?
It means this...
The ten pounds of fat-mass that you did lose has made
you
slightly slimmed, agreed, but it does not affect your
metabolism. However (and this is one GIANT however), the 10
lbs of lost muscle means your metabolism (remember, that's
the number of calories your body uses at rest) has dropped
significantly.
Now your body requires even fewer calories to function
than
it did BEFORE you started dieting. So when you start eating
normally again, what happens?
That's right -- WHAM! Back comes the weight, faster
than
ever before.
That's why it is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to protect lean
body
mass while dieting. It is without a doubt, the dieter's
A-number-1 mission.
Here's the best ways to go about it...
o In addition to weighing yourself on the bathroom
scales,
constantly monitor your lean body mass. I recommend the
Digital BodyFat Calipers available from MuscleMaster.
They're easy to use, affordable and accurate. I bought one
over Christmas, and I love it. You can find out more here...

-
o Reduce calories, but not drastically. Your bodyweight
times 10 or 12 in calories, divided up into 5-6 small
balanced meals a day is the best approach. For example...
If you weigh 150lbs...
10 X 150 = 1500
1500/5 = 300, Or 5 small balanced meals of 300 calories
1500/6 = 250, Or 6 small balanced meals of 250 calories
On the higher end of things...
12 X 150 = 1800
1800/5 = 360, Or 5 small balanced meals of 360 calories
1800/6 = 300, Or 6 small balanced meals of 300 calories
-----SIDEBAR-----
Do this in pounds, not kilos. If you're more
familiar with the metric system, simply take
your weight and multiply by 2.2. That will
give you a pretty close approximation of your
weight in pounds.
-----SIDEBAR-----
--
o Don't skip meals, and REALLY don't skip breakfast.
It's
critical to your success!
--
o Most importantly, do a little strength training.
Believe
me, young or old, man or woman, EVERYONE can benefit from a
strength training routine. More critically in this case
however, weight training will help protect your lean muscle
mass. Not only that, it will help build new muscle which
will further elevate your metabolism.
Ladies, don't worry about turning into a female version
of
Arnold Schwarzenegger -- you lack sufficient levels of the muscle
building hormone testosterone for this to happen. Weight
training will make you slim and toned.
--
OK, now that I've outlined the real story about "yo-yo"
dieting please...
Act on this information.
Don't continue the vicious circle. Start eating properly,
start tracking both your weight AND your lean body mass, and
start weight training.
It'll make a world of difference!

Reader Tip: Improving Cytodyne's Cytoplex
If you're not familiar with the convenience provided
by
meal replacements, then you're certainly missing out.
These handy little guys make eating balanced meals
mind-numbingly simple.
Of course, some meal replacements are better than
others.
I did a head-to-head comparison of three of the top
brands on Ultimatefatburner.com some time ago. If you
haven't read the article, visit now...

Of all the meal replacements I reviewed, my least
favorite
product was Cytodyne's Cytoplex. A decent formulation to be
sure, but the taste?
Blech!
However, I got a great email from a visitor
(amesius@airmail.net) on how to improve the taste
(specifically the chocolate flavor!). The instructions are
simple...
Add 1 package of Sweet&Low and 1/2 teaspoon of
cinnamon.
Mix as usual... and enjoy! (For a change! ;-)

Prolab's Metabolic Thyrolean
This is an interesting product. I bought some in December
during MuscleMaster's "free shipping" promotion. I'd always
been intrigued by this product, and the "two bottles for the
price of one" special (still on by the way), made it
impossible to resist.
This product is a NON-stimulant fat burner. Ingredients
include calcium, phosphorous, potassium, phosphatidylcholine
(achew! Bless you!;), l-tyrosine and Gum Guggul extract.
The last two ingredients are the most interesting.
Gum Guggul is actually a resin produced by a tree
native to
India. The standardized extract called "guggulipid" or
"guggulsterones." It has been used in natural medicine
practices in India for 100's of years. A study published in
the The Journal of Associations of Physicians in India
(1989) showed this substance to have a powerful effect in
decreasing blood fats (called triglycerides) AND LDL
cholesterol (that's the "bad" cholesterol), while elevating
levels levels of the good cholesterol "HDL."
Since then, Gum Guggul extract has also showed some
positive
effects as a weight loss agent -- suspected as a result of a
positive effect upon the body's main thyroid hormones, T3 and
T4.
L-Tyrosine, the other important compound in this
formulation, may also play an important part in optimizing
thyroid hormone levels, as well as increasing mood,
concentration, and productivity.
Generally, Gum Guggul extract is thought to be quite
safe
and non-toxic. However I found that while on the elevated
dose recommended on the bottle (dose increases gradually
from 2-6 capsules per day over 8 days) I experienced slight
cramps, some flatulence (perhaps TOO much information? ;-),
and slight constipation. Lowering the dose eliminated these
problems.
In summation, I think a product like Prolab's Metabolic
Thyrolean is definitely worth experimenting with. With that
said, I think to really see optimum results you might wish
to combine it with a stimulant based fatburner (like
Xenadrine or Hydroxycut, for example). Of course, always
see your doctor before taking any supplements, and don't
expect supplements to work miracles by themselves. You
still need to exercise and eat properly. ;-)
