Your Humble Host... An A.C.E. Certified Personal Trainer?

Well, I've taken the first step towards becoming a
fully-fledged certified Personal Trainer. My package from
the American Council on Exercise (www.acefitness.org)
arrived this week. Looks like I'll be writing my exam in
Toronto sometime in May. I'm excited to get started, but am
somewhat daunted by all the work I'm going to have to find
time to do!

Canadian Government Issues Voluntary Recall Of
Ephedrine-Based Diet Supplements

The media-driven frenzy against ephedrine continues. Yup,
now the Canadian Government has joined in, issuing a
"voluntary" recall of certain ephedrine-based products...

o Products providing more than 8mg ephedrine per dose or 32
mg per day.

o Products intended for long-term use (more than 7 days).

o Products that combine ephedrine with other stimulants
(i.e. caffeine).

o Products that have "labelled or implied claims" of
appetite suppression, weight loss promotion, metabolic
enhancement, yada, yada, yada.

Isn't it interesting that they didn't target any of the many
over-the-counter cold and cough remedies that contain other
ephedrine alkaloids -- pseudoephedrine, norpseudoephedrine,
and norephedrine (also labelled as phenylpropanolamine)?

1 Down, 11 To Go!

Phew! Looks like we've made it through January. For those
of us here in the Northern Hemisphere, spring seems like a
long, long way off. And the long, lazy days of summer?

An eternity. On the plus side, I guess there's still plenty
of time to get slimmed down for the beach! ;-)

But I digress -- on to the matter at hand!

February is a CRUCIAL month for dieters.

Chances are you started January fresh and motivated, ready
to go another round in the battle of the bulge. Depending
on the goals you have set for yourself, and the progress (or
lack of progress) you have made towards achieving them,
February may find you lacking in the critical resolve
necessary for continued success.

Please, don't shelve your efforts yet!

If you find yourself in this position, here's what to do...

-

o Re-evaluate your goals. Setting small, practical, and most
importantly ATTAINABLE goals is critical to maintaining that
crucial motivation. Have you done this? Or have you set
yourself up for failure by establishing impossible goals?

Remember... a realistic goal is 1-1.5 pounds of weight
loss per week. 10 pounds in 10 days is not a goal...

It's a scam.

You may not even wish to set weight-oriented goals. You
may simply resolve to avoid soft drinks, or that mid-morning
donut.

A word about weight-oriented goals...

Using the scales to gauge your progress is
detrimental (unless you are also tracking
your body fat percentage with body fat
calipers).

Why?

Because your weight will vary as much as
several pounds throughout the day. Women can
gain several pounds during their monthly
cycle -- and it's all water. If you're on a
carbohydrate-restricting diet, a single day
carb binge will pack the weight back on --
water weight.

On the other hand, if you suddenly start
working out at the gym, a sudden gain in
weight may be indicative of muscle tissue.
This is always a good thing (lean muscle
burns calories at rest and therefore elevates
the metabolism).

But a scale would not tell you that!

I picked up a digital fat caliper from
MuscleMaster just after Christmas. It's a
relatively small, easy-to-use gadget that
measures your body fat with a minimum of
hassle. Highly recommended!

(Ladies, you'll need a partner for this --
one spot in particular (back of the triceps)
is very difficult to measure by yourself).

Procrastination is a KILLER! And it often just sneaks up on
you so subtlety...

"I'm too tired to exercise now, I'll start tomorrow".

Chances are things aren't going to be any better tomorrow.
There comes a point where it's time to...

Just do it!

o Spend a few quite moments alone. Reflect on who you are,
who you'd like to be, how you feel, and ask yourself...

Am I happy as I am?

Society sells us this vision of handsome, muscular men, and
slim, buxom bathing beauties. Most REAL people don't look
like this, and being a few pounds overweight doesn't make
you any less of a human being. Maybe you're happy with who
you are, as you are?

In this case, resolve to eat well and exercise, and don't
fret what you weigh. Believe it or not, you can be fit,
healthy AND overweight.

If you are not happy, resolve to do your BEST, and begin
plotting that roadmap to success. Here's that article on
